On the fourth floor of an old building in the old town of Yord…
Inside a cramped apartment, Estelle Berg laid on the bed with some of her hair draped over her forehead and face. The hair covered her complicated expression.
This was the third day since her reincarnation. All along she thought that she was dreaming. But today the stinging slap on her face snapped her into reality.
Clunk…
The bedroom door opened.
Libby Carter, Estelle's mother, stood at the door and brought over a bowl of porridge, and said, "Essie, you ate so little during breakfast, aren't you hungry?"
Estelle raised her head and then looked at Libby as if she wanted to see through the woman who had been her mother for thirty years.
"I saw Ariel and her friends leave just now looking upset. Did you quarrel with each other?"
Was there a need to ask?
There were still red finger marks on Estelle's face.
Estelle's eyes dulled and then she looked away and shook her head in disappointment, "No."
"That's great. Just now someone from the Hawk family called to say that Brian Hawk could see us for fifteen minutes this afternoon. They instructed that we should be there early to wait for him."
Libby beat around the bush and finally said why she was here. At this point, Estelle remembered that she was betrothed when she was a child.
Her grandmother and Brian's grandfather had betrothed them to each other when they were young. Brian's grandfather gave them a broach as proof of this agreement.
The Berg family had been poor all these years but Libby did not feel that life was difficult. She had been looking forward to Estelle's college graduation and then being married into the Hawk family.
To her, once Estelle married into the wealthiest family in Yord, her years of poverty would come to an end.
However, eight years ago on this day, Brian had arranged to meet them.
Except that he wanted to cancel the marriage agreement.
Estelle looked down and said softly, "Okay."
Estelle had always been obedient but somehow Libby felt that they had somehow grown apart. Because of this, Libby looked at Estelle for a while but could not detect anything.
She put aside her doubts, then stood up and said, "Prepare yourself and dress up properly."
"Okay."
Libby said and then took away the bowl of porridge.
"Please have some tea. Mr. Hawk is still having a video conference. Perhaps you'll have to wait for another ten minutes." Brian's assistant, Lamar Cash, said as he served Libby and Estelle tea.
Libby looked at Lamar's wristwatch. She had been a maid for a wealthy family and could recognize several branded watches. She then asked Lamar, "Your watch is expensive. Does it pay well to work here?"
Lamar braced up and said, "The salary is decent. The importance is Mr. Hawk treats us very well."
Libby smiled and raised her teacup while whispering to Estelle, "Speak nicely to Brian and ask him to let you work here. Their salary should be rather high."
Although she spoke softly, Lamar could hear every word.
Estelle looked down and did not reply.
They drank several cups of tea while waiting. When Libby began to fall asleep on the sofa, there was finally some movement in the office.
Brian wore a well-tailored black colored business suit. He was handsome and dashing. His body was even more perfect than a male model.
Estelle looked at Brian and then his face overlapped with the man to whom she lost her virginity a month ago.
That night, they were both drunk and did not see each other clearly.
In her past life, it was only when Brian brought the bracelet to look for her that she realized that the man that night was him.
